Absence From School

If a child is going to be absent from school, the parent/caregiver should ring the school office by 9.00am on the day or notify the school by using the absence button on your Skool Loop App.

Please give the teacher an advance warning of any planned absence.

Bought Lunches

We do not provide bought lunches at Ōuruhia Model School, but we sometimes have a fundraising sausage sizzle. Parents will receive an email when we are having a sausage sizzle and an order form will come home with your child on the Monday.  Sausage sizzle lunch is usually held on a Friday.

Subway  Once a week children are able to order Subway for lunch.  This is delivered to school every Tuesday.  Please see the school office for instructions on how to do this.

School Uniform

Ōuruhia Model School has a compulsory school uniform. Colours are jade for the top (Polo shirt or skivvy) and navy blue for the bottom (shorts, culottes or track pants). There are also navy blue sweatshirts and polar fleece tops. Uniform items with "Ōuruhia Model School" monograms can be ordered through the school office each term. Plain non-monogrammed items in jade and blue can be purchased from K-Mart, Postie Plus, or the Warehouse, Northwood. Brimmed or bucket-style sun hats are compulsory in summer. Shoes need to be suitable for a wide range of school activities, including Physical activities. (no platform soles).

Dental Clinic

There is no dental clinic at Ōuruhia Model School but children are often screened by a mobile clinic. Children are then referred to the Northcote Community dental clinic (24 Tuckers Road) for further treatment if required. A dental therapist contacts the parents with appointment times. Parents are responsible for taking their children to the clinic. Ph 0800 846 983.

Technology and Workshop Classes

Year 7 & 8 pupils attend Technology & Workshop classes (covering workshop technology, food technology, and swing/fabric) at Kaiapoi Borough School one day a fortnight. They catch the bus from school at 9.00am and return by 3.00pm. Pupils are required to pay for the materials used at Kaiapoi Borough. They will be advised of the cost at the beginning of each semester.

School Hui

On a Monday morning a School Hui is held in Pūharakekenui.  Throughout the term other School Hui are held as needed for special occasions.  Parents are always welcome to come and share Hui with us.  We will email parents to advise them when a special Hui is going to be held.

School Hours

Classes start at 8.50 a.m. and finish at 3.00 p.m. It is beneficial to children to arrive between 8:30 and 8:45am to allow them time to connect with their friends and teachers before school starts.

Break Times

10:15 - 10:35am - morning play

10:35 - 10:45am - morning eat time

12:45 -  1:05pm -lunch play

1:30 - 1:50pm - lunch eat time

Stationery

Stationery packs are purchased from the school office at the beginning of the year.  This ensures that all children have the same stationery. The cost of this stationery is very competitive to other stationery outlets with some items being cheaper.  The cost is approximately $40 per child.

Library

Ōuruhia Model School has an up-to-date, wide ranging collection of book and non-book resources to meet the recreational and learning needs of the children. The library collection is computerised with issues, returns and stock-takes being done with bar-code readers. Children are encouraged to read and regularly borrow books. Children can borrow 2 books at the time for a period of 2 weeks.

Children are unable to get out a new book until any overdue books a returned. Please respect that value of the books taken home and encourage their being both read and cared for.

A charge is made for lost and damaged books.

Swimming Pool

We believe that all kiwi kids need to learn to swim. Ōuruhia Model School is one of the few schools which still has its own pool. We value the ability to have daily swimming lessons on-site.

Concerns and Complaints Procedures

If parents/caregivers have a general concern about the school, a school activity or its programmes, the first step is to discuss the problem with the staff member concerned at an appropriate time e.g. after school. It is recommended, if required, that regular contact meetings be held following a concern being raised to monitor progress and decide whether a different solution should be tried e.g. weekly meetings for a mutually agreed length of time.

Ōuruhia School is moving to School Docs for all of our Policies and Procedures.  We are currently in the process of aligning the School Docs Policies with current Ōuruhia School ones.  When this has been finalised we will have an Ōuruhia School username and password. We will notify parents by email what this is.  There will also be a link to the School  Docs website here for your information.

Until this happens please feel free to pop into the school office and pick up a copy of our current Concerns and Complaints Policy.
